5 Things You Can Do to Prepare for Your First Driving Lesson

As with all big steps in life, the day of your first driving lesson can be a nerve-wracking one. However, there are some steps you can take before you first driving lesson to ensure that you are as prepared as possible and the lesson goes smoothly.

In this article, we’ll be listing five of the most important steps you can take so you first driving lesson is as exciting and educational as possible.

Before Your First Driving Lesson

Always make sure you have a good night’s sleep before you first diving lesson so you are as alert and as receptive as possible. Don’t be tempted to go out the night before as the alcohol will still be in your system when you get behind the wheel for the first time. 

You need fuel to learn, so make sure you have a good breakfast and hydrate properly. Lastly, it’s always a good idea to double-check when and where your driving instructor is going to meet you.

What to Bring to Your Driving Lesson

Other than your provisional driving license, there isn’t anything you are required to bring to your lesson. However, there are a few things you can bring to make your life a little easier:

• Comfy, non-slip shoes. No sandals or flipflops.
• Glasses, if you need them for driving.
• A bottle of water 

Remember You Cockpit Drill

Your driving instructor will explain the cockpit drill to you, but just so you aware here is a quick refresher of the general principles:

•  Are the doors securely closed?
• Is your seat in a comfortable position?
• Have you established your steering position?
• Is your seatbelt on?
• Are your mirrors adjusted?

What Are You Likely to Learn?

Every driving instructor has their own method of teaching, but there are some basic procedures you are likely to cover during your first lesson:

• Moving off and getting ready to use your gears
• Clutch control including finding the biting point
• Checking your mirrors and blind spot
• Signaling with your indicator
• Changing gear
• Stopping the car, covering the brake and the clutch
• Curb-side parking

Practice Makes Perfect

Just because your driving lessons only happen at set times doesn’t mean you can’t practice outside of them. Once you’ve finished your driving lesson for the day, you should feel free to practice what you’ve learned with a qualified family member or friend.
