Driving School Put 10-year-olds Behind the Wheel

It’s an unfortunate fact that newly qualified drivers are far more likely to crash than those with more experience. In fact, despite only accounting for 7 percent of the drivers on the road, newly qualified drivers account for more than 30 percent of those who are killed in vehicle accidents every year.

A UK based organization called Young Driver, who is the UK’s largest provider of pre-17 driving lessons, is looking to change those sad statistics by getting people behind the wheel as young as the age of 10, to extend the time that learners spend in the car.

Less Experience, Higher Mortality 

One of the reasons given for the increased rate of newly qualified drivers experiencing fatal motor vehicle collisions is the lack of time they spend familiarising themselves with the road. 

With the increasing popularity of intensive driving courses, newly qualified drivers may have spend as little as a week in the car, specifically being coached to pass their test. This lack of time to properly familiarise themselves with the hazards of the road results in almost 1,300 17-24-year-olds who are killed or seriously injured in road accidents each year.

Research into the subject has indicated that training drivers over a longer period of time and catching youngsters developing unsafe attitudes towards driving are still developing is key to producing safer drivers.

Young Driver allows prospective drivers to spend more time familiarizing themselves with the car and the rules of the road in a safe, specifically constructed, environment, using their weekend schools to emphasize the importance of safety and encourage young drivers to consider how to drive responsibly by giving them time to perfect their driving skills without the pressures of public roads.

By putting children as young as 10 in front of the wheel allows youngsters to have a solid understanding of how to drive a car before they get anywhere near a real road, meaning when they do learn at 17, they can focus more on other road users and potential hazards.

The company is also offering specialist cars to allows disabled children to experience driving for the first time and also build up a wealth of experience using the unique controls of a disability-friendly car.
