5 Questions You Should Ask Your New Driving Instructor

The best way to learn from someone is to have a productive relationship with them and the best relationships are based on good communication. To make sure you and your driving instructor are on the same page, here are five questions you should ask your new driving instructor before your first lesson.

What Is Covered in the First Lesson?

Like any class, it is best that you go in prepared. Establishing what is going to be covered in the first lesson will allow you some preparation and practice time and give you a little boost of confidence that comes from knowing the situation you are going into.

Should I Book an Intensive Course or Longer-term Lessons?

Discuss your budget and timetable with your instructor. They are easily the best-placed person to advise you on which of the two most common models of driving lessons would suit you best.

I Have Special Requirements, How Can You Accommodate This?

Always advise your instructor of any special requirements, even if you don’t think they apply to driving lessons. Peanut allergies, dyslexia, and even the need for prescription glasses are all factors which you driving instructor needs to be made aware of in advance. 

Remember, they have a duty of care to you and you have the responsivity to inform them of any special requirements so they can adapt their lessons to suit you.

If We Don’t Get On, What Is Your Refund Policy?

Sometimes, people just don’t work well together. While nobody wants this to be the case, and it is very rare that it happens, its best to prepare for that uncomfortable situation. Don’t be embarrassed to ask about a refund policy, your driving instructor is a professional and should be entirely willing to discuss these kinds of issues with you before money changes hands.

Will I Have the Same Instructor Each Lesson?

Not all driving schools, especially the larger ones, will assign you a personal driving instructor. It is worth checking to see if you will be learning with the same person on a regular basis, or if you can expect to be assigned whoever is free at the time of your lesson.
